Puppy-cam folks have some responsible things to say

Wow, talk about a “get”! The folks behind the Shiba Inu “puppy cam” talk to MSNBC.com … and you can tell from their answers they’re ethical, responsible and knowledgeable breeders.
And no, you can’t have a puppy. Neither can the Obamas:
Honestly, it is probably not my first recommendation as I have been told that the Obama daughters require a hypoallergenic dog. Additionally, most of Shiba Inus must be kept on leash or in a secured/fenced location due to their high prey drive. We do wish the Obamas the best in choosing the right dog for their family.

Um, except for one tiny detail:
There isn’t any such thing as a hypo-allergenic dog.
Since they’re not claiming that Shiba Inus are hypo-allergenic, you can’t blame them for not knowing that. Especially as often as this myth is tossed around these days, especially by all the “doodle”-hyping sellers. There are some breeds (and possibly, mixes) [...]

Buyers and ‘rescuers’ of puppy-mill pets keep cruelty flowing

Over on Raised by Wolves blog, dog trainer and SAR dog handler Heather Houlihan lays it all out for anyone who’a thinking of patronizing the sick, immoral and inhumane puppy-mill industry with a pet store puppy purchase this holiday season. It’s an absolute must read:
‘Tis the season in which puppymills make their profits. What consumers do in the next month determines whether Amos and Ada fire up the puggle factory for spring production, or cut their losses and go back to making oak furniture and rhubarb preserves. You decide whether March sees the opening of a shiny new GNC in that mall slot, or another year of shivering Yorki-poos behind glass.

We can only repeat, over and over again: If it is for sale in a pet store, it came from a puppymill. If it came from a puppymill (and it did, it did — do you get this? — it [...]

Reading food labels won’t help if the labels lie

Hat tip to Terrierman this morning for making me extremely happy that everything I will eat today came from the local organic farmer’s market, my own garden or my own hens. From the Center for Science in The Public Interest:
A new report from the Government Accountability Office gives federal food regulators failing marks when it comes to preventing false and misleading labeling.
The GAO report found that while the number of food firms and products has increased dramatically, the Food and Drug Administration’s oversight and enforcement efforts “have not kept pace.” The FDA is supposed to conduct label reviews when it inspects foreign food firms, but in 2007 only inspected 95 firms overseas (there are tens of thousands) and in only 11 countries (out of 150 that export food to the U.S.)

Here’s the rest.
The pet food recall? Terrierman notes — and we’ve said it from Day One — it was the [...]

The folks at Honda sure know how to please a pack of DogCar drivers who are hungry for a vehicle with enough space and utility to tackle their daily pet projects.
First the automaker gave us the Honda Element, which made history by winning “Best of Show” honors in the first-ever DogCar of the Year announcement. The Element is so decidedly DogCar friendly that the Honda Marketeers decided to roll out some funny canine commercials to promote the boxy SUV’s appeal to those who love to travel with their pups.
Now Honda is upping the ante with the launch of the redesigned Honda Pilot, a mid-sized sport utility vehicle that — like the Element — fills many of the specific requirements to make it a decent DogCar:

Seats that fold flat or are easily removable.
Lots of usable cargo space relative to the size of the vehicle.
Wide, square backs, with as little rear slope [...]

This man makes my stomach turn. There’s just nothing else to say. From the AP, as Michael Vick now faces state charges after serving his federal time:
Michael Vick put family pets in rings with pit bulls and thought it was funny watching the trained killers injure or kill the helpless dogs, a witness told federal investigators during the dogfighting investigation that brought Vick down.
In a 17-page report filed Aug. 28, 2008, by case agent James Knorr of the U.S. Department of Agriculture and released Friday under the Freedom of Information Act, a person identified as confidential witness No. 1 said Vick placed pets in the ring against pit bulls owned by “Bad Newz Kennels” at least twice and watched as the pit bulls “caused major injuries.”
The witness said Vick and co-defendants Purnell Peace and Quanis Phillips “thought it was funny to watch the pit bull dogs belonging to Bad Newz [...]
